Archivopteryx
FAQ
What's an Archivopteryx?
Archivopteryx (not to be confused with archaeopteryx) is a web-based application intended for students in archives classes. It allows students to manipulate a collection of materials virtually. Right now, Archivopteryx allows students to experience the acquisition and arrangement steps of the archival process.
How do I create an account?
To create an account, go to the registration page. Right now, you can only create an account using a Simmons email address. If for some reason you desperately need an account using a different address, please email molly.duggan@simmons.edu.
I forgot my password. Can I reset it?
Not right now. This feature will be included in future releases. For now, if you have a password problem, email molly.duggan@simmons.edu and I'll reset it for you.
What is planned for future releases?
We've got a whole array of new features planned for Archivopteryx in the future, including a description segment that would allow students to created EAD to describe their collection. You can also take a look at the To Do list on the project wiki at http://code.google.com/p/archivopteryx/wiki/todo.
Is Archivopteryx open source?
It sure is! The Digital Curriculum Lab at Simmons GSLIS is committed to using open source software. Also, the developer believes pretty strongly that what she makes should be shared, used and improved. You can grab the source code from the Google Code SVN repository where it lives. You'll also find the database schema, system requirements, and all that good stuff. There are no install scripts yet, but these should be arriving soon.
What's an archaeopteryx?
An archaeopteryx was a bird that lived during the Jurassic period. Sometimes referred to as "the first bird", it had both avian and reptilian characteristics - feathers, wings, teeth and claws.
What's with the name?
One of the developer's favorite hobbies is sticking words together to make newer, better, sillier words. Also, it's common knowledge that words ending in 'x' are really great.
